Double-clad fibers are active optical fibers with an additional pump cladding that accepts pump radiation with low beam quality. They are widely used in high-power fiber amplifiers and lasers, enabling efficient energy transfer from the pump light to the highly coherent laser light. They are thus acting as brightness converters.

Some aspects to consider before buying double-clad fibers: core and cladding diameter, cladding shape, numerical aperture of core and cladding, type of density of laser-active dopant, pump absorption efficiency, power handling capacity, protective coating, thermal stability, availability of spectroscopic data, badge-to-badge consistency.

The high numerical aperture for the pump core/inner cladding lets you pump with high efficiency, even with inexpensive or high-power broad-area emitting pumps.
