Optical traps of different kinds can be used to trap single atoms or ions, in other cases small clouds containing many atoms or ions, or small particles. They work based on light forces created by laser beams. Typical applications are in different areas of metrology, e.g. optical frequency standards and gravitation measurements, but also in other fields like biology.
