Photomultipliers are highly sensitive photodetectors, exploiting electron multiplication. Besides conventional photomultiplier tubes, there are microchannel plate detectors which are much more compact. Photomultipliers are available with cathodes for different spectral regions, substantially differing also in terms of responsivity.
