Semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) have become very common for passive mode locking of lasers, mostly solid-state lasers. Passive Q switching is also possible, e.g. with microchip lasers. SESAMs can be made for different operation wavelengths and other parameters such as modulation depth, saturation fluence, operation bandwidth and recovery time.
