Company Description
HBK FiberSensing, S.A., is a business unit of HBK – Hottinger Brüel & Kjær located in Maia, Portugal, and dedicated to the development and production of advanced monitoring systems based on Optical Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. Originally founded in 2004 and acquired in 2014 by Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik (HBM), the company today manages all HBK optical activities, including product development, manufacturing, and business development, while working in conjunction with the global sales organization, which currently marks its presence in more than 50 countries worldwide.
Specially requested for test, measurement, and monitoring applications in markets such as energy, civil engineering, wind, transportation, industry and R&D, HBK FiberSensing optical solutions are used in a wide range of applications where long-term, self-referenced and reliable measurements are required.
HBK FiberSensing provides a comprehensive portfolio of sensors, interrogators, software and complete solutions, which are fully developed in-house from concept to manufacture, using proprietary technology. We therefore have the capability to build customized monitoring solutions according to customer-specific requirements, making it a preferred partner for OEM agreements.
HBK – Hottinger Brüel & Kjær was founded in 2019, when Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik (HBM) and Brüel & Kjær (B&K) merged their activities into a new company aiming to form the world’s foremost provider of integrated test, measurement, control, and simulation solutions. HBK continues to build on the two legacies, untapping the potential of combined knowledge and insight within three physical domains – mechanical, sound and vibration and electrical – and allowing us to pursue solutions for the unmet needs of our customers. With more than 3500 employees worldwide and production facilities in Denmark, Germany, UK, USA, China, and Portugal, HBK is a leading player in the field of test and measurement.

fiber-optic sensors |
HBK FiberSensing newLight sensor technology enables large strain measurement ranges at increased long-term stability. It is the ideal choice for structural health monitoring due to its fast and easy installation and its resistance to environmental conditions such as humidity, rust, and salt even over extremely long distances. The compatibility with standard telecom cables makes this line very cost efficient – especially for medium-to-high channel applications. The newLight range is based on the Fiber Bragg Grating technology and offers optical sensors for measurements of strain, temperature, accelerometer, and tilt. In addition to fiber optical sensors that measure strain, temperature, acceleration, tilt or displacement, HBK also offers optical interrogators, software, as well as service and support for every application. |
optical displacement sensors |
Based on the newLight® technology, the FS61DSP displacement sensor is a ruggedized Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor designed to measure linear displacement on different types of structures. The sensor uses two FBGs in a push-pull configuration for effective temperature compensation. It can be used in a large range of monitoring applications, like sustaining walls, bridge piles or buildings. |
optical force and pressure sensors |
As part of the HBK pantograph monitoring solution for predictive maintenance of pantographs and overhead powerlines, the FS66HDL Heavy duty force sensor is an optical force sensor fully rated for railway applications. The HBK pantograph monitoring solution is a fully optical measurement solution to be installed on regular operating trains, directly on the pantograph. It is based on load and acceleration optical sensors that are passive and safe for accurate measurements on high-voltage levels. Additionally, make the system hybrid by integrating information from vehicle bus signals and GPS to build a graphical map of the infrastructure and its maintenance plan. By using this system, instead of periodic track interruption for maintenance, the owner can continuously assess the overhead power line condition and, plan for maintenance on demand. |
optical metrology equipment |
Optical interrogators for accurate and precise measurements of Fiber Bragg Grating signals. Suitable for large scale sensing networks, HBK FiberSensing interrogators provide precise and high resolution static and dynamic measurements 24/7 through reliable software interfaces. Compatibility with catman software enables hybrid optical/electrical sensing to be easily managed. |

The newly developed optical sensor line newLight enables large strain measurement ranges at increased long-term stability. It is the ideal choice for structural health monitoring due to its fast and easy installation and its resistance to environmental conditions such as humidity, rust, and salt even over extremely long distances. The compatibility with standard telecom cables makes this line very cost efficient – especially for medium-to-high channel applications. The newLight range is based on the Fiber Bragg Grating technology and offers optical sensors for measurements of strain, temperature, accelerometer, and tilt. optical strain sensors |
The FS62 optical strain sensors of the newLight sensor series are designed to easily retrieve static and dynamic strain measurements for stress analysis in smart materials, machines, components, and other types of structures. With different encapsulations, materials, and attachment methods, they fulfill the requirements of strain measurements for smart materials testing, laboratory, and structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain sensors from HBK are available in two configurations: Linear configuration for measuring strain in a single direction. This is the ideal configuration for monitoring or stress analysis on a well-known direction. Rosette configuration, comprising three Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) on the same fiber and substrate. Measurements are taken in different directions for biaxial stress analysis with a single installation and small footprint. |
optical temperature sensors |
The newLight FS63 optical temperature sensors are based on the Fiber Bragg Grating Technology (FBG) and designed to accurately retrieve temperature measurements in large structures and machines without interferences from external noise. Furthermore, their small size and lightweight structure makes them the ideal choice for hard-to-reach locations and measuring points granting low transmission losses even under harsh environments. With improved temperature stability, these sensors are particularly suited for temperature measurements in large structures and thermal mapping in electrical machines. Moreover, the FS63 temperature sensors can be used for thermal compensation of other optical sensors. These sensors can be ordered with or without calibration, retrieving absolute temperature measurements or simply for use as a temperature compensation element. |
optical tilt sensors |
The newLight FS64 tilt sensor is suitable for measuring small angle variations. It can be used in a large range of monitoring applications such as sustaining walls, bridge piles, tunnels, or buildings. The measurement of tilt in different directions is possible with the use of multiple sensors. Based on the newLight optical sensor line, the FS64 tilt sensor is a ruggedized Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) inclinometer designed to measure very small angle variations towards the vertical. The sensor uses two FBGs in a push-pull configuration for effective temperature compensation. |
optical vibration sensors |
The FS65 accelerometer is a high precision vibration sensor based on newLight technology tailored to measure acceleration at different frequencies from 0 to 50 Hz. The accelerometer can be used in a large range of monitoring applications where low frequency, but relevant amplitude vibrations are present, including measuring load induced vibration of civil structures and ambient cable vibrations. The simultaneous measurement of vibration along different axes is possible using multiple accelerometers. As part of the HBK pantograph monitoring solution for predictive maintenance of pantographs and overhead powerlines, the FS65HDA Heavy duty accelerometer is an optical acceleration sensor fully rated for railway applications. The HBK pantograph monitoring solution is a fully optical measurement solution to be installed on regular operating trains, directly on the pantograph. It is based on load and acceleration optical sensors that are passive and safe for accurate measurements on high-voltage levels.
