Company Description
Schäfter+Kirchhoff GmbH was founded 1956 and started with classic lens design and customer-specific optical solutions. The company focus has gradually shifted to today’s product lines: polarization-maintaining fiber optics, lasers for machine vision as well as line scan cameras and scanner systems.
Schäfter+Kirchhoff GmbH has its headquarters in Hamburg, Germany. At this location, high-quality optical products are developed, manufactured and shipped to customers all over the world, and beyond. Our focus is set on the winning combination of high optical and mechanical precision.
Fiber optics: Schäfter+Kirchhoff manufactures fiber optic components for single-mode, polarization-maintaining and multimode fiber cables from UV to IR. Our product range includes laser beam couplers, fiber couplers, fiber collimators, fiber cables, multicube elements for compact and rugged fiber-optic systems, fiber port clusters, polarization analyzers and fiber-coupled laser sources.
Lasers for machine vision: Schäfter+Kirchhoff offers a wide range of diode-based laser systems with wavelengths from the UV to the IR. Products include laser line generators with different line geometries, laser focus generators and laser collimators that are being used in the machine vision sector, for laser triangulation or laser light sectioning.
Line scan cameras: Another main product line of Schäfter+Kirchhoff are line scan cameras in monochrome and color with different interfaces. These are used mainly in the machine vision sector.
Scanner systems: Line sensors also form the basis of highly specialised scanner systems and sensor heads, such as high-resolution scanners or the robot-guided line scan camera. When combined with specially developed software, they become a complete measurement system, such as the Corrosion Inspector for automated evaluation of corrosion phenomena.
After 60 years of private ownership, Schäfter+Kirchhoff GmbH was transferred in 2016 to the Gregor Federau Foundation, which was established by the former owner of the company to support child and youth welfare.

Products
Product category | Description |
---|---|
achromatic optics |
We offer fiber couplers like the laser beam couplers series 60SMS or the fiber collimators series 60FC or series 60FC-F with fine-focussing mechanism with achromatic and even apochromatic optics (corrected for 400 – 640 nm). |
acousto-optic modulators |
Coming soon: Double-Pass Acousto-Optic Modulator (AOM) All fiber-coupled, polarization-maintaining acousto-optic modulator setup for tunable frequency shifting and laser light intensity modulation. The modular muticube™ system of Schäfter+Kirchhoff allows for integration of a variety of acousto-optical modulator setups including various laser wavelengths and RF frequency ranges. Entire fiber port clusters with integrated modulators can be built. In addition, these setups can be combined with monitor diodes, shutters, beam splitters and other established multicube™ components. More information. |
alignment lasers |
The fiber-coupled laser diode beam sources of type 51nano-S have reduced power noise (< 0.1% RMS (< 1 MHz)), reduced coherence length (≈ 300 µm) and a low speckle contrast as a result of the internal RF modulation. They are available with wavelengths from 405 nm to 1550 nm. |
anamorphic prism pairs |
Anamorphic optics act one-dimensionally on the elliptical profile of the collimated beam. They can e.g. be used to adjust the larger beam diameter to the dimension of the smaller one, producing a radially symmetric beam or transform a circular beam into an elliptical one. Anamorphic beam-shaping optics type 5AN are cylinder lens systems and, therefore, can be additionally used to correct the astigmatic difference. |
beam delivery systems |
We offer beam delivery systems that consist of a laser beam coupler of series 60SMS, a polarization-maintaining fiber cable and a fiber collimator of series 60FC. |
beam splitters |
Schäfter+Kirchhoff offers compact, rugged and highly efficient and fully fiber-coupled opto-mechanical units for splitting fiber coupled radiation for the configurations 1 ⇾ 2 and 2 ⇾ 2. |
fiber cables |
We offer single-mode, polarization-maintaining or multimode fiber cables. PCF fiber cables and special braodband RGB fibers are also available. |
fiber collimators |
Schäfter+Kirchhoff offers a wide range of fiber collimators that can be used for collimating or in reverse as an incoupler. This includes the series 60FC collimators or series 60FC-SF collimators with super fine-focussing mechanism. For large beam diameters the series 60FC-T collimators can be used with integrated TILT mechanism. Special collimators 60FC-Q with integrated quarter-wave plate or made from amagnetic titanium are also available. |
