Contribute Images to the RP Photonics Encyclopedia
Why Contribute?
The RP Photonics Encyclopedia is a highly popular resource, widely used across the photonics community and provided free of charge by RP Photonics. Images or videos provided by third parties are beneficial for everyone involved:
- Readers of the Encyclopedia benefit when technical content is not only well explained in text, but also clearly illustrated.
- As we acknowledge the image source in the figure caption, the contributor is visible to many users as someone who brings a valuable contribution.
- RP Photonics is enabled to serve the community even better.
What We Offer
- Your image or video is published as part of a highly visible encyclopedia article in a resource of high reputation, seen by many professionals in industry and scientific research.
- We provide proper attribution in the figure caption. Typically, it is done in the form “Image courtesy of (company name)”, with the company name linked to the company's homepage.
- This results in additional visibility for your brand — even if you are not (yet) using our Advertising Package.
- Such links have the “nofollow” attribute, i.e., they are not intended to influence search engine rankings.
What We Ask For
- The image(s) or video(s) must meet certain criteria — see below.
- We need your permission to use the images in the RP Photonics Encyclopedia, and your confirmation that you assume legal responsibility for publishing them (see below for details).
- There is no payment involved; this is intended as a mutually beneficial cooperation.
Criteria for Images and Videos
Offered images should meet the following criteria:
- They should be technically relevant for a specific article. Ideally, they help readers to better understand the concepts explained in that article. It is acceptable for an image to show a brand name, but the character should be primarily informative rather than advertising.
- For each image, we ask for a short explanation of its content for display in the figure caption.
- Images should be of high quality and have sufficiently high resolution. Images intended to span the full article content column should typically have a width of roughly 1000 px. Don't worry if your images have too high resolution; we can scale them down as needed.
- A white background is ideal, although some other (not too dark) color is often acceptable.
A typical type of suitable images are photographs showing technical details. Another possibility are drawings illustrating a certain aspect.
Conditions
By providing images through the form below, you confirm that you accept the following conditions:
- We (RP Photonics) can freely decide whether to use offered images, and where to place them in which articles of the RP Photonics Encyclopedia. (For any publication outside the Encyclopedia, e.g. on other web pages, we would request separate permission.) We will inform you on all the pages where your images have been placed.
- We may display images in slightly modified form, e.g. with margins cropped, with the resolution reduced to achieve a more appropriate file size, and/or in an additional compressed image format for faster loading. Texts for image captions may also be modified.
- You not only grant RP Photonics permission to use the images as described and the corresponding descriptions, but also assume legal and financial responsibility in case a third party credibly claims that its copyright has been violated by that use. Typically, RP Photonics as the website operator would first have to pay the third party and would then claim back that amount from the institution which provided the relevant image(s).
- You can revoke your permission to use the images at any time. We will then remove them from the website within a short time (at most a few working days, usually faster).
- There is no payment to RP Photonics for the advertising effect, nor any payment from RP Photonics for the permission to use the image(s).
Having our Advertising Package for the RP Photonics Buyer's Guide is not a condition for having your images published in the Encyclopedia.

We will handle your data carefully in agreement with privacy laws. That implies that we will not send your data to third parties, except with your explicit consent. For more details, see our privacy declaration.
